Ayr is the capital town of Ayrshire, a rural county in the south west of Scotland. Ayr is a popular holiday resort with a good shopping and leisure facilities. Ayr is an old town with many historic buildings.
Glasgow Prestwick Airport is just a few miles north of Ayr. It was formally Scotland's main transatlantic gateway but is now primarily serving European destinations.
Ayr boasts numerous parks and walks, small animal corners and a farm park. There are tennis courts/clubs, many leisure clubs, Ayr Rugby Club, Ayr United Football Club and Ayr Cricket Club. Ayr Ice Rink also is open for skating but also curling.
Golf is a big attraction to the Ayrshire coast. There are eight municipal courses in and around Ayr itself. Other championship courses at Troon and Turnberry are a short drive away.
Ayr is a centre for horse racing. Races take place every month. The Scottish Grand National is held in April and the Ayr Gold Cup is held in September.
Ayrshire has many castles. Culzean Castle with its beautiful gardens and walks is 'the jewel in the crown' of Scotland's National trust properties. Culzean is a short drive south of Ayr, near Turnberry. The castle was used by General Eisenhower for his headquarters as supreme commander in Western Europe in World War II.
Robert Burns, Scotland's National Poet, was born at Alloway in 1759 in a thatched cottage which is now open as a showplace and museum.
